Biography

Ana María Ortiz, known artistically as Ana Marietta, is a Puerto Rican muralist and painter whose work has become part of the urban landscape in cities across the world.
Born in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, Ortiz began painting as a child in her father’s woodshop, experimenting with tempera paint on discarded wood pieces. Those early explorations shaped a lifelong fascination with animals, symbolism, and storytelling through imagery.
Ortiz later attended the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, where she studied art while completing a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences. This dual interest in art and the natural world would become a defining element of her visual language. Her work isrecognized for its distinctive humanoid creatures—animals rendered with anthropomorphic features, expressive eyes, and subtle gestures. Through these hybrid figures, she explores empathy, identity, and the quiet emotional parallels between humans and animals, often blending sensitivity with humor.
Over the past decade, Ortiz has developed an extensive international practice as a muralist, creating large-scale public works that transform walls into contemplative narratives. Her murals are known for their delicate brushwork, atmospheric shading, and the signature beaks and humanlike gazes that characterize her creatures. These monumental works invite viewers into a silent dialogue with the figures that inhabit them.
Her street pieces can be found in cities around the globe, including London, Miami, Turin, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Kiev, among many others. Through murals and public art festivals, Ortiz has contributed to an evolving global conversation about contemporary street art and the power of shared public space.
Since relocating to Houston in 2011, she has continued to expand her international presence while also becoming an active figure in the city’s cultural community. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions including Mexico, London, and the Station Museum of Contemporary Art in Houston. She has also participated in major international mural and street art events such as Life Is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas, Pow! Wow! Hawaii, SXSW in Austin, Artscape, Desvelarte Festival in Spain, Santurce es Ley and Yaucromatic in Puerto Rico, as well as Art United Us in Kiev and Street Art for Mankind in Houston.
Today, Ortiz continues to balance her studio practice with education and community engagement. Since 2023, she has served as an artist instructor at the Glassell School of Art, part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where she mentors emerging artists while continuing to paint murals and develop new work internationally.
Through her murals and paintings, Ana Marietta has established a visual language that transcends geography—one where animals, humanity, and imagination meet on walls around the world.
